Master of Science Study Program Structure in Electrical Engineering

This page contains a simplified description of the rules of the master of science study program in electrical engineering at TU-Berlin in English language. Complete information and official documents are available at the teaching area of the homepage of Faculty IV - in German language only.

Important: It is assumed that students are bilingual (B2 or higher) in German and English.

Note: While much of the information contained on this page applies to all M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering students, it has been designed for students specializing in Communication Systems (Kommunikationssysteme). Some information may not pertain to students in other Specific Study Areas (Studiengebiete)

Program Structure

The Master’s of Science in Electrical Engineering program (Masterstudiengang Elektrotechnik) is designed to be completed in four semesters (two years). In order to graduate, Master’s candidates must obtain 120 Leistungspunkte (a standard educational unit or credit - one LP is equal to 10 hours of class instruction) divided between several categories. Ideally, students will achieve 30 LP per semester, spending the first three semesters on modules (a collection of one or more courses) and the fourth semester on a Masterarbeit (thesis). Students are encouraged to consult the Studien- und Prüfungsordnung für den Masterstudiengang Elektrotechnik an der Fakultät IV - Elektrotechnik und Informatik - an der Technischen Universität Berlin vom 06. A Brief Explanation

Berufspraktikum [Practicum] - 12 LP - See StuPO §5.6 and the Praktikumsordnung für den Masterstudiengang Elektrotechnik.

Wahlpflichtbereich [Required Choice] - 66 LP - See StuPO §5.3. Divided into three subcategories:

  • Theoretische Grundlagen [Theoretical Foundations] - 6 LP - Communication Systems students should take Foundations of Stochastic Processes.
  • Studiengebiet [Specific Study Area] - 36 LP - Communication Systems. Students choose from the list of corresponding modules (see StuPO - Anlage I). The recommended track suggests which Communication Systems modules to take and when to take them.
  • Module aus allen Studiengebieten [All Study Areas] - 24 LP - Any Master's level modules, in Electrical Engineering or Information Technology, offered by Faculty IV. The track also offer recommendations under this category.

Wahlbereich [Electives] -12 LP - See StuPO §5.5. Any eligible modules offered by TU Berlin or by other accredited institutions.

Masterarbeit [Thesis] - 30 LP - See StuPO §9.

As per StuPO §5.1, students have the right to design their own program of study with the constraint that they meet all of the conditions and requirements established by the Studien- und Prüfungsordnung.
