Recommended Study Track for Specialization in Wireless Communications
This page contains the description of a recommended study track for master students in electrical engineering who pursue a professional profile in communication technology with emphasis of wireless communications.
Important: It is assumed that students are bilingual (B2 or higher) in German and English.
Wichtiger Hinweis: Es wird angenommen dass alle Studenten über hinreichend gute (B2 oder höher) deutsche und englische Sprachkenntnisse verfügen.
Track: Wireless Communication Systems
Track proposed by: Prof. Giuseppe Caire, Ph.D. of the Communications and Information Theory Group
Overview
Wireless Communication Systems are perhaps the most pervasive and ubiquitous infrastructure of our time. Billions of people around the world access the Internet through a wireless interface. The number of connected wireless devices is roughly equal to the number of humans on the planet. In the near future, the Internet of Things will lead to a number of wireless devices one or two orders of magnitude greater. Understanding and mastering this field requires a balance of theoretical foundations, specific theoretical knowledge, specific applied knowledge, and problem-solving, project-oriented skills. The aim of this Track is to develop the above skills through a consequential concatenation of modules.
The modules in the Specific Study Area (36 LP) of this particular Track develop the fundamental theory underlying modern digital communications, the tools for the design and optimization of wireless systems, and the understanding of the protocols for multi-access coordination in wireless networks. The menu of modules advised to complete the All Study Areas component (24 LP) serves to complement and extend these foundations in the direction of (for example): audio and video coding, a specific overview of wireless standards and multi-antenna (MIMO) schemes, future internet protocols and network architectures, or integrated analog-digital hardware design.
Modules: Specific Study Area - Communication Systems
These modules, when taken together, will allow students to complete all of their Specific Study Area - Communication Systems (Studiengebiet - Kommunikations- systeme) requirements (36 LP - shown in red/orange above) within the three semesters allotted by StuPO 2015.

Modules: All Study Areas
It is recommended that students fulfill their All Study Areas (Module aus allen Studiengebieten) component (24 LP - shown in yellow above) with a selection of modules listed below and specially curated by Prof. Caire. Students are reminded that they must complete at least one project within their Required Choice (Wahlpflichtbereich) modules in order to graduate (see StuPO §5.4). Please note that, in terms of semester, All Study Directions (Module aus allen Studiengebieten - shown in yellow) and Electives (Wahlbereich - shown in blue) are interchangeable.
