Course Description: Security and Privacy of Information Systems (343319 L 001)

Course Objectives

The ubiquity of information technologies such as wireless communications, biometric identification systems, online data repositories, and smart electricity grids has created new challenges in information security and privacy. Traditional approaches based on cryptography are often inadequate in such complex systems and fundamentally new techniques must be developed. Information theory provides fundamental limits that can guide the development of methods for addressing these challenges, and the purpose of this module is to introduce the information-theoretic foundations of security and privacy and to get an overview of the state-of-the-art developments in this field.


Course Content

Foundations of information-theoretic security and privacy:

  • weak/strong secrecy 
  • semantic security
  • privacy leakage 
  • differential privacy 

Secure communication:

  • wiretap channel
  • multi-antenna wireless communication systems
  • imperfect channel state information 

Authentication: 


  • secret key generation 
  • wireless physical-layer authentication 
  • biometric authentication 
  • physically unclonable functions (PUFs) 

Data systems and related applications:


  • security in distributed storage systems
  • privacy-preserving information access and dissemination (private information retrieval)
  • security and privacy in content centric networks (caching)
  • privacy in the smart grid
