TITLE:
Smart Energy Management in Wireless Networks with Harvested Energy

ABSTRACT: 

As traffic demands further grow, the increase of the energy consumption in wireless networks has become a key concern in 5G era. Utilizing the renewable energy by energy harvesting technologies is an effective way to deal with the global energy crisis.  However, as the harvested energy is highly unstable in nature, it has to be managed in a smart way in order not to cause too much performance degradation when the harvested energy is not enough, whereas not to waste the harvested energy too much when it is more than enough.  For this purpose, the energy management in wireless networks need to be jointly optimized with the availability of the harvested energy, the remaining room of the battery, as well as the content and the distribution (both temporal and spatial) of the traffic demands.

In this talk, we firstly overview the energy spreadsheet of mobile operators in China and propose a new concept called “Energy Informatics”.  Then, we study the enabling technologies of the energy informatics for both the single-cell and multi-cell scenarios.  Specifically, both offline and online policies for optimal resource allocation in SISO (single input single output) and MIMO (multiple inputs multiple outputs) networks and both the proactive content caching and pushing technologies for GreenDelivery in heterogeneous macro/micro cellular networks will be presented. Simulations and case studies are provided to show effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed schemes. Research issues of the proposed Energy Informatics and GreenDelivery framework are also discussed.

BIO:

Zhisheng Niu graduated from Beijing Jiaotong University, China, in 1985, and got his M.E. and D.E. degrees from Toyohashi University of Technology, Japan, in 1989 and 1992, respectively.  During 1992-94, he worked for Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., Japan, and in 1994 joined with Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, where he is now a professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering.  His major research interests include queueing theory, traffic engineering, mobile Internet, radio resource management of wireless networks, and green communication and networks.  

Dr. Niu has been an active volunteer for various academic societies, including Director for Asia-Pacific Board (2008-09), Director for Conference Publications (2010-11), and Chair of Emerging Technology Committee (2014-15) of IEEE Communication Society.  He also served as a distinguished lecturer (2012-15) of IEEE Communication Society and a distinguished lecturer (2014-16) of IEEE Vehicular Technologies Society. Dr. Niu received the Outstanding Young Researcher Award from Natural Science Foundation of China in 2009 and the Best Paper Award from IEEE Communication Society Asia-Pacific Board in 2013.  He also co-received the Best Paper Awards from the 13th, 15th and 19th Asia-Pacific Conference on Communication (APCC) in 2007, 2009, and 2013, respectively, International Conference on Wireless Communications and Signal Processing (WCSP’13), and the Best Student Paper Award from the 25th International Teletraffic Congress (ITC25).  He is now the Chief Scientist of the National Basic Research Program (so called “973 Project”) of China on "Fundamental Research on the Energy and Resource Optimized Hyper-Cellular Mobile Communication System" (2012-2016), which is the first national project on green communications in China.  He is a fellow of both IEEE and IEICE.
