Prof. Shlomo Shamai, Technion, Israel

Shlomo Shamai (Shitz) received the B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, in 1975, 1981 and 1986 respectively. During 1975-1985 he was with the Communications Research Labs, in the capacity of a Senior Research Engineer. Since 1986 he is with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, where he is now a Technion Distinguished Professor, and holds the William Fondiller Chair of Telecommunications. His research interests encompasses a wide spectrum of topics in information theory and statistical communications. Dr. Shamai (Shitz) is an IEEE Fellow, a member of the Israeli Academy of Sciences and Humanities and a foreign member of the US National Academy of Engineering. He is the recipient of the 2011 Claude E. Shannon Award and the 2014 Rothschild Prize in Mathematics/Computer Sciences and Engineering. He has been awarded the 1999 van der Pol Gold Medal of the Union Radio Scientifique Internationale (URSI), and is a co-recipient of the 2000 IEEE Donald G. Fink Prize Paper Award, the 2003, and the 2004 joint IT/COM societies paper award, the 2007 IEEE Information Theory Society Paper Award, the 2009 and 2015 European Commission FP7, Network of Excellence in Wireless COMmunications (NEWCOM++, NEWCOM#) Best Paper Awards, the 2010 Thomson Reuters Award for International Excellence in Scientific Research, the 2014 EURASIP Best Paper Award (for the EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking), and the 2015 IEEE Communications Society Best Tutorial Paper Award. He is also the recipient of 1985 Alon Grant for distinguished young scientists and the 2000 Technion Henry Taub Prize for Excellence in Research. He has served as Associate Editor for the Shannon Theory of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, and has also served twice on the Board of Governors of the Information Theory Society. He has served on the Executive Editorial Board of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory.

 

Prof. Helmut Bolcskei, ETH Zürich, Switzerland

Helmut Bölcskei was born in Mödling, Austria on May 29, 1970, and received the Dipl.-Ing. and Dr. techn. degrees in electrical engineering from Vienna University of Technology, Vienna, Austria, in 1994 and 1997, respectively. In 1998 he was with Vienna University of Technology. From 1999 to 2001 he was a postdoctoral researcher in the Information Systems Laboratory, Department of Electrical Engineering, and in the Department of Statistics, Stanford University, Stanford, CA. He was in the founding team of Iospan Wireless Inc., a Silicon Valley-based startup company (acquired by Intel Corporation in 2002) specialized in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems for high-speed Internet access, and was a co-founder of Celestrius AG, Zurich, Switzerland. From 2001 to 2002 he was an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has been with ETH Zurich since 2002, where he is a Professor of Electrical Engineering. He was a visiting researcher at Philips Research Laboratories Eindhoven, The Netherlands, ENST Paris, France, and the Heinrich Hertz Institute Berlin, Germany. His research interests are in information theory, mathematical signal processing, machine learning, and statistics.

He received the 2001 IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award, the 2006 IEEE Communications Society Leonard G. Abraham Best Paper Award, the 2010 Vodafone Innovations Award, the ETH "Golden Owl" Teaching Award, is a Fellow of the IEEE, a 2011 EURASIP Fellow, was a Distinguished Lecturer (2013-2014) of the IEEE Information Theory Society, an Erwin Schrödinger Fellow (1999-2001) of the Austrian National Science Foundation (FWF), was included in the 2014 Thomson Reuters List of Highly Cited Researchers in Computer Science, and is the 2016 Padovani Lecturer of the IEEE Information Theory Society. He served as an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, and the EURASIP Journal on Applied Signal Processing. He was editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory during the period 2010-2013. He served on the editorial board of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine and is currently on the editorial boards of "Foundations and Trends in Networking” and "Foundations and Trends in Communications and Information Theory”. He was TPC co-chair of the 2008 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory and the 2016 IEEE Information Theory Workshop and serves on the Board of Governors of the IEEE Information Theory Society. He has been a delegate of the president of ETH Zurich for faculty appointments since 2008.

 

Prof. Syed Jafar, UC Irvine, USA

Syed Ali Jafar received his B. Tech. from IIT Delhi, India, in 1997, M.S. from Caltech, USA, in 1999, and Ph.D. from Stanford, USA, in 2003, all in Electrical Engineering. His industry experience includes positions at Lucent Bell Labs, Qualcomm Inc. and Hughes Software Systems. He is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California Irvine, Irvine, CA USA. His research interests include multiuser information theory, wireless communications and network coding.

Dr. Jafar received the Blavatnik National Laureate in Physical Sciences and Engineering in 2015, the UCI Academic Senate Distinguished Mid-Career Faculty Award for Research in 2015, the School of Engineering Mid-Career Excellence in Research Award in 2015, the School of Engineering Maseeh Outstanding Research Award in 2010, the ONR Young Investigator Award in 2008, and the NSF CAREER award in 2006. His co-authored papers received the IEEE Information Theory Society Best Paper Award in 2009, IEEE Communications Society Best Tutorial Paper Award in 2013, IEEE Communications Society Heinrich Hertz Award in 2015, IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award (to student co-authors) in 2015, an IEEE GLOBECOM Best Paper Award in 2012 and an IEEE GLOBECOM Best Paper Award in 2014. Dr. Jafar received the UC Irvine EECS Professor of the Year award five times, in 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2014, from the Engineering Students Council and the Teaching Excellence Award in 2012 from the School of Engineering. He was a University of Canterbury Erskine Fellow in 2010 and an IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer for 2013-2014. Dr. Jafar was recognized as a Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher and included by Sciencewatch among The World's Most Influential Scientific Minds in 2014 and again in 2015. He served as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications 2004-2009, for IEEE Communications Letters 2008-2009 and for IEEE Transactions on Information Theory 2009-2012. Dr. Jafar was elevated to IEEE Fellow, Class of 2014, for contributions to analyzing the capacity of wireless communication networks.

 

Dr. Hans-Peter Mayer, Nokia Bell Labs

Hans-Peter Mayer is Head of Next Generation Wireless research within Nokia Bell Labs Wireless.

He received a PhD degree in Physics from University of Tübingen in 1987 then joined Alcatel where he did research on high-speed optoelectronic components. 

From 1995 on, Hans-Peter led a team conducting early work on UMTS systems with a technical focus on mobility and scheduling. This led to the design and realization of first UMTS, HSPA and LTE (advanced) field trial systems.  
The following work on LTE had a focus on multi-antenna techniques, array antennas and COMP, later on RAN virtualization and split processing. 
In 2010/2011 Hans-Peter Mayer moved his direction to the definition and design of 5G systems with technologies supporting multi-tenancy, forward compatibility and multiple services. 
Since 2013 there is again a stronger focus on RAN aspects: the 5G air interface, small packets, array antennas and RAN architecture. 

Hans-Peter Mayer is a member of IEEE, he has carried out his research work into a number of collaborative projects:  he was the co-initiator for the German EASY-C project on LTE advanced, of FP7 ARTIST-4G, then METIS-5G and the set of 5GPPP wireless projects within Horizon2020. Currently Hans-Peter has the role of a Technical Manager within METISII.


Prof. Stephan ten Brink, University of Stuttgart, Germany

Stephan ten Brink has been a faculty member at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, since July 2013, where he is head of the Institute of Telecommunications. From 1995 to 1997 and 2000 to 2003, Dr. ten Brink was with Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, New Jersey, conducting research on multiple antenna systems. From July 2003 to March 2010, he was with Realtek Semiconductor Corp., Irvine, California, as Director of the wireless ASIC department, developing WLAN and UWB single chip MAC/PHY CMOS solutions. In April 2010 he returned to Bell Laboratories as Department Head of the Wireless Physical Layer Research Department in Stuttgart, Germany. Dr. ten Brink is a recipient and co-recipient of several awards, including the Vodafone Innovation Award, the IEEE Stephen O. Rice Paper Prize and the IEEE Leonard G. Abraham Paper Prize for contributions to channel coding and signal detection for multiple-antenna systems. He is best known for his work on iterative decoding (EXIT charts) and MIMO communications (soft sphere detection, massive MIMO).
