Guidelines for bachelor and master thesis work at CommIT

The following rules and remarks have to be considered by thesis candidate students and their technical advisers:

  1. Official advisors for bachelors and masters theses must be professors or Dr.-habil. Two advisors are required for each thesis.

  2. The thesis student may only begin his/her thesis work after approval has been granted by the TU-Berlin administration (Prüfungsamt).

  3. The thesis project should begin with a brainstorming meeting between the candidate, the official advisor, and the technical advisor.

  4. Within two weeks after this initial discussion the student, with the aid and supervision of his/her technical advisor, should submit a plan outlining  projected milestones and providing some bibliography base. It is recommended that this plan be the subject of a follow-up meeting.  The following topics may be addressed in this meeting:

    a) Has this thesis problem been addressed before, in some form?
    b) What does the student want to do with respect to existing work?
    c) Are there related works, studies, software, and/or experiments that can be regarded as a starting point for the student’s work?

  5. The technical advisor should have regular consultations with the thesis student. He/she must report serious deviations from the work plan to the official advisor promptly.

  6. About half way through the duration of the work (masters thesis work duration: 6 months, bachelors thesis work duration 4 months) a presentation about the achieved results and a further work plan should be given by the thesis student to the official advisor and the technical advisor. Adjustments may then be made to the work plan.
  7. A final presentation of the thesis is expected (and mandatory under StuPO 2010), after the thesis is finished and has been delivered to the TU-Berlin administration (Prüfungsamt).
